Claremont Savings Bank Community Center

Claremont, N.H.

Year in Showcase: 2013

Project Description

First conceived in 2001 following a community-wide needs assessment, this community center project struggled with size and funding issues for years before the City of Claremont redefined its approach in 2009, opting for a design-build strategy that would finally result in the Claremont Savings Bank Community Center, a 52,000-square-foot, two-story building set into a hillside.

The building was designed to be one story along the front facade, an intentional strategy that respects the residential neighborhood and streetscape that it embraces. The small pitched roof massings step back one to the other and showcase a series of soft colors that introduce a playful variation to the full facade.

Visitors are first greeted by a central reception area, which provides oversight and access control to the entire building. From this circulation space, which also acts as a viewing area to the pool and gym below, there is direct access to the administrative office suite, concessions, a youth recreation room and two multipurpose rooms.

Walls consist of gypsum drywall with a neutral paint scheme, ceilings are acoustical tiles, and lighting leans toward the utilitarian. A healthier budget was available for materials used in locker rooms and restrooms, as well as mechanical systems, dehumidification and lighting for larger spaces.
